EPISODE 72 - PREPARING FOR LAMBING 2027

Lambing season might still be months away, but preparations are already underway at Cantref Adventure Farm! Join Farmer Colin out in the fields as we discover why getting ready for lambing 2027 starts long before the first lambs arrive.

WELCOME TO THE SERIES

Welcome back to Behind the Barn Door - your behind-the-scenes look at life at Cantref Adventure Farm. In Episode 72, we're heading out into the fields with Farmer Colin to find out how we're preparing our sheep for the 2027 lambing season.

Although spring might seem a long way off, there's plenty of work involved in getting ready for the arrival of our next generation of lambs. Lambing is one of the busiest and most important times of the farming calendar, and successful preparation begins months in advance. This week, Farmer Colin gives us an insight into the planning and care involved in managing our flock ahead of next year's lambing season.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • Why preparations for lambing begin months before spring
  • What goes into getting our flock ready for the next lambing season
  • How Farmer Colin manages and cares for our sheep throughout the farming year
  • Why forward planning is so important on a working sheep farm
  • A behind-the-scenes look at the work involved in preparing for lambing 2027

LIFE ON A WORKING FARM

“There's always something happening on the farm, whatever the season. A lot of the work visitors don't get to see is just as important as the exciting moments they do.”
“Being a working farm is at the heart of Cantref, and we love being able to share a little of everyday farming life with the families who visit us.”

WHY DOES LAMBING PREPARATION START SO EARLY?

Lambing is one of the highlights of the farming year, but there's much more to it than the arrival of newborn lambs. Sheep farmers begin preparing well in advance to help ensure their flock is healthy and ready for the months ahead.

Managing the flock's nutrition, monitoring their condition and planning ahead for the breeding season are all important parts of sheep farming. The decisions made in autumn can have a significant impact on the following spring.

At Cantref, our sheep are part of the everyday life of our working farm in the Brecon Beacons. Through Behind the Barn Door, we love giving visitors an insight into the work that happens throughout the year, including the preparations that often go unseen.
